Iowa State found themselves in one of the biggest matchups in college basketball Monday night in Houston. With the two teams fighting for an outright spot of first place in the conference, the pressure was on for the Cyclones. Arguably the two best defensive teams in the nation, both found themselves having to step up offensively. Houston controlled the game from the jump, with the help of senior guard Jamal Shead. Shead not only controlled the game offensively finishing with 26 points, he also proved why he might be the best defensive player in the nation. The Cyclones on the other hand struggled to find themselves in an offensive rhythm. They hit big shots down the stretch via Tre King, Keshon Gilbert, and Curtis Jones, however they couldn't find themselves ahead at any point in the game. While the inconsistency continued on offense, the team was put through the wringer via the Houston defense. 16 turnovers certainly did not help the Cyclones in any way, as they got a taste of their own medicine. Houston continued to show why their home building is up there with best, escaping the #6 Cyclones in a huge conference showdown.

With all eyes on the Monday matchup, many were starting to wonder how far the Cyclones can go deep into March. Losing to Houston was certainly not a bump in the road, it was a boost in the road. The Cougars are arguably the best team in the nation at this moment and can solidify that Saturday against Baylor. The Cyclones proved they can hang with the big dog in college basketball. They've done it all year in conference play with their elite defense and all around offense. Coming out with elite victories and consistency in the best conference in basketball. This Cyclone team has proven they can make a name for themselves in March and make a run to the Final Four.

With five games remaining in the regular season, the Cyclones can very well win out, and finish 14-4 in conference play. There is a high possibility that Houston and Iowa State could find themselves in a third matchup come Big 12 Championship time. The team has the tools, as teams with good defense tend to find success throughout March Madness. Ranking top three in defensive efficiency, this will be what can will the team to consecutive victories in the big tournament. Also consisting of elite guard play and high energy bigs, the team can spark up offensively against any team they find. With all of this being said, this Cyclone roster is built for March and could find themselves going as far as any team in the nation.

There are high hopes for Cyclone Nation from here on out.
